Palaszczuk Government steps up action on Ice

The Palaszczuk Government is tackling the ice scourge that is devastating individuals, families and communities across the State, with a roundtable be held in Townsville on May 17.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the roundtable followed Queensland’s first Ice Regional Community Engagement Summit in Rockhampton, which was attended by more than 150 people, last month.

“The Summit brought together community leaders, government and non-government service providers to seek their views on what is working, what is not, and what more can be done,” she said.

“Importantly, we heard directly from a number of people whose lives have been gripped by ice, as former users themselves, or as family members trying to support a loved one.”

The Summit considered the 65 actions outlined in the Government’s draft action plan to tackle ice, Action on Ice.

Minister Assisting the Premier on North Queensland Coralee O'Rourke said there was no “one size fits all” approach to this problem and our action plan recognises that.

"I wrote to the Premier in February calling for more to be done, and for a Roundtable to be held here in Townsville,” Minister O’Rourke said.

“The Government will continue to consult and listen broadly across Queensland prior to finalising the draft plan and the Townsville roundtable will be an opportunity to hear from experts, service providers and local community members."

“The Government is determined to work with all levels of government, service providers and the community to break the hold that this drug has over individuals, families and communities.”
