$300,000 for projects that promote welcoming communities in Queensland

Fifteen projects across the state to promote and celebrate multiculturalism in Queensland will share in $300,000 thanks to a key Queensland Government grants program.

Multicultural Affairs Minister Grace Grace today announced the successful recipients from the second round of the 2016-17 Celebrating Multicultural Queensland grants program.

“I’m delighted we are investing $300,000 to help organisations deliver a range of projects across Queensland, from Gladstone to Townsville to the Gold Coast, during the 2017-18 financial year,” she said.

“These are projects that promote community participation and connections between diverse cultural groups and the wider community.

“It’s also about making all Queenslanders feel welcomed and included regardless of their backgrounds, cultures or faiths, celebrating the positive contributions we can all make”.

The projects to receive funding include a Gold Coast-based initiative to link migrants and refugees with local sports clubs, youth services and TAFE, and an educational project to promote child care and early childhood education programs to migrant and refugee families across North Queensland and South West Queensland.

Ms Grace said Queensland had a proud and vibrant multicultural heritage, and our diversity was one of our state’s greatest strengths.

“The successful projects are wide-ranging but they all share a common theme of celebrating our multiculturalism and welcoming refugees and migrants to our wonderful state,” she said.

“Through engaging project participants in sports, education, social development, and child care initiatives, these projects will help break down barriers and increase the participation of people from culturally diverse backgrounds, including migrants and refugees in our communities.”
