It was fantastic to be down at St Pat's to see the Townsville Aquaculture Initiative in action. Chatting to the students and hearing their passion for the subject and our environment makes me confident that the future is in good hands!
St Patrick’s College Townsville Aquaculture Initiative builds on Townsville’s reputation as the world’s best tropical research hub, with high-school students being offered a streamlined pathway from school to university and a career in marine science.
It is one of six new projects sharing in $1.2 million funding from the Palaszczuk Government’s new $6 million IET Partnership Fund to promote Queensland’s international education and training (IET) industry
St Pat’s Townsville is the only successful applicant outside southeast Queensland in this round of funding.
The Aquaculture Initiative will recruit students from Papua New Guinea to study marine science. The program will have a direct link to the Bachelor of Science in Aquaculture Science and Technology, and the Bachelor of Science (Marine Biology) at James Cook University.
The project will strengthen networks in business and marine science; and create a link between industry, schools and universities to promote employment after graduation.
Students will be able to follow careers that improve the world’s food security and develop sustainable livelihood alternatives.
