Townsville region businesses called to share in $200 million school works program

Businesses from Townsville’s local building and construction industry have been called to register for government work, ahead of tenders opening for projects under the Queensland Government’s $200 million Advancing Queensland Schools program.

Minister Assisting the Premier on North Queensland and Member for Mundingburra Coralee O’Rourke said the program will deliver almost 100 school infrastructure projects across Queensland, with the improvement of school halls a priority.

“Special education facilities in ten schools will be upgraded, nine schools will have administration building upgrades and shade structures and covered outdoor learning areas are planned at 25 schools,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“We estimate that this pipeline of work will support over 500 jobs for local contractors across Queensland, and I want to make sure Townsville businesses get their fair share.”

Member for Townsville Scott Stewart said that the sessions were being held in various locations across the state so that local businesses have the opportunity to be involved.

“The Townsville session will be held at 2pm, Friday 28 April at the Building and Asset Services office, 9-15 Langton Street, Garbutt,” Mr Stewart said.

“We’re putting the call out to local businesses to come along and learn how you can be a part of this pipeline of work that will make a real difference to the Townsville community.

“The session will take local businesses through how to register for government work, and how to become pre-qualified for bigger jobs.”

Member for Thuringowa Aaron Harper said tenders for the Advancing Queensland Schools program will open progressively from next month (May).

“I strongly encourage local businesses to make sure you’re considered for opportunities by registering as soon as possible.

“There are a wide range of works planned, so just about every trade will be required – painters, builders, concreters, roofers, electricians, plumbers and many more.

“So come along and find out how to get involved - you’ve got to be in it to win it.”

Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni said by registering with our Building Asset Services team, they can also be provided opportunities to tender on other government building work outside of the program.

“We currently also spend over $200 million each year repairing, upgrading or building public buildings and we need local businesses to deliver this work,” Mr de Brenni said.

“Local work should be done by local businesses wherever possible, so I strongly encourage every local business to get in touch with Building and Asset Services and register.”
