Local Queensland businesses called to share in $200 million school works program Local contractors have been called to register for government work ahead of tenders opening for projects under the Queensland Government’s $200 million Advancing Queensland Schools program. Speaking today at the first session in Brisbane, Member for Bulimba Di Farmer said a series of information sessions will be held in various locations across Queensland to let local businesses know how they can put their hand up for a share of the work on offer. “We’re putting the call-out to local businesses to come along to our sessions and learn how they can be a part of this pipeline of work that will make a real difference to local communities,” Ms Farmer said. “We’ve kicked off these state-wide sessions in Brisbane, and will then hold sessions at Kingaroy, Townsville, Maryborough, Chinchilla, Toowoomba, Mackay, Cairns and Rockhampton.” Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni estimated the project will deliver close to 100 projects and support over 500 jobs for local businesses. “Tenders will open progressively from next month, so businesses can make sure they’re considered for opportunities by registering as soon as possible,” Mr de Brenni said. “There are a wide range of works planned, so just about every trade will be required – painters, builders, concreters, roofers, electricians, plumbers and many more.” Mr de Brenni said by registering with our Building Asset Services team, they can also be provided opportunities to tender on other government building work outside of the program. “We currently spend over $200 million each year repairing, upgrading or building public buildings and we need local businesses to deliver this work,” Mr de Brenni said. “Local work should be done by local businesses wherever possible, so I strongly encourage every local business to get in touch with Building and Asset Services and register.” Education Minister Kate Jones said more than 80 school communities would benefit from the Advancing Queensland Schools program. “A key priority of this infrastructure program is bringing forward more than $100 million to deliver new upgraded halls at 30 schools,” Ms Jones said. “In addition special education facilities in ten schools will be upgraded, nine schools will have administration building upgrades and shade structures and covered outdoor learning areas are planned at 25 schools.” For further information about the Building Asset Services (BAS) registration process, phone 3008 3319 or email [email protected].
