CBD footpaths cement Townsville’s liveability

Townsville CBD is cementing its liveability with the Palaszczuk Government partnering with Townsville City Council to deliver a $1.8 million footpath replacement program.

Minister for Local Government and Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, Mark Furner said the project would have far reaching benefits for the community and the city’s liveability.

“The Palaszczuk Government’s footpath rejuvenation investment will improve pedestrian safety and enhance the appeal of Townsville’s CBD as a destination and business centre for the North,” Mr Furner said.

“It’s a footpath upgrade program that complements Townsville City Council’s Utilities Upgrade Project which includes the installation of new water infrastructure in many of the same areas of the city.

“By delivering two projects in tandem it’s another good example of the great community benefits that can be achieved when the Palaszczuk Government works in partnership with forward thinking councils like Townsville City.”

Townsville City Mayor Jenny Hill said the timing was perfect.

“We saw a unique opportunity to deliver two important projects at the same time,” Mayor Hill said.

“The end result will create a visual lift for the CBD, which will also improve community confidence, promote the establishment of new businesses and encourage more visitors.”

Member for Townsville, Scott Stewart said the investment by the Palaszczuk Government and Townsville City Council was delivering jobs for local contractors.

“We know jobs and a pipeline of work are important for local contractors and that’s what these projects deliver,” Mr Stewart said.

“I understand from Council the project will support 10 jobs which is good news for local tradies as well as the suppliers of concrete and other materials – it’s a solid investment in Townsville’s workforce.”

The Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program supports local governments to deliver infrastructurewhich is designed to create jobs and contribute to building safe, caring and connected communities.

‘It’s a win for jobs, it’s a win for pedestrians, and it cements Townsville’s place as one of Australia’s most liveable cities,” Mr Furner said.
