Housing Construction Jobs Program open for business in Townsville

Townsville builders, developers and community housing providers are invited to attend a business briefing session to find out how to be part of building new social and affordable housing projects in the region.

The Housing Construction Jobs program, part of the Palaszczuk Government's $1.8 billion Queensland Housing Strategy, will see a range of opportunities on offer for local builders and tradies

Minister Assisting the Premier on North Queensland and Member for Mundingburra Coralee O’Rourke said local tradies, builders and developers needed more local work to keep businesses open and food on their tables.

“There has been a shortage of local work for Townsville builders, developers and community housing providers, which has put pressure on both businesses and families,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“That is why we are holding this session to help small, medium and large businesses to secure projects and certainty.”

Member for Townsville Scott Stewart said the Department of Housing and Public Works would host a business briefing event at Rydges Southbank on Friday, with sessions for developers, builders, community housing providers and tradespeople.

“The morning session will talk about how builders, developers and community housing providers can partner with government to deliver a range of housing solutions, and the evening session will take tradies through the process of registering for government work,” Mr Stewart said.

Member for Thuringowa Aaron Harper said the $1.8 billion Queensland Housing Strategy investment will see over 5000 new homes built over ten years, with 137 to be built in Townsville.

“This construction will support 29 full time jobs per year, and I want to see those jobs go to local tradies and builders wherever possible,” Mr Harper said.

Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni said projects included state-owned sites ready for immediate construction, identified private sector projects with development approvals in place, and precinct based development opportunities.

“Whether your business is building small detached homes, or large scale developments, there’s work to be had – so come along to a session and find out how to be involved,” Mr de Brenni said.

“Expressions of Interest are now open until July 31 on the Q Tenders website.”

The Townsville Housing Strategy Roadshow sessions will be held on Friday June 23 at Rydges Southbank, 23 Palmer Street, South Townsville.
